What are VPNs?

In simple words, VPN software is a useful tool that hides your IP address and lets you access restricted content and websites. This tool has gained popularity over the years and is used by 30% of internet users for streaming, torrenting, privacy, unblocking, etc.

There are two types of VPNs in the market:

Paid VPNs
Free VPNs

I recommend using paid VPNs to access restricted content and applications because they offer top-notch security, servers, and speed.

Although free VPNs are not behind, Proton VPN is one of the best free VPNs and has unlimited data for its users. Hotspot Shield and PiradoVPN are also included in the list but have restrictions and data caps in the freemium model.

Why are VPNs becoming popular?

There are several reasons behind the popularity of VPNs. Here are a few reasons I can think of behind the rising trend in VPN usage.

Internet censorship

Countries like Iran, China, Russia, etc have imposed an unofficial ban on VPNs and free internet. You can not access Twitter, Instagram, Whatsaap, and independent news sites from these countires.

These restrictions create a sense of suffocation among users accustomed to freely accessing the internet. In response, many turned to VPNs to satisfy their desire for unrestricted internet access and the freedom to explore information.

Geo-restrictions

Although geo-restrictions are a form of internet censorship, let me explain them in detail. When a website that was previously accessible on your device becomes blocked by the government under the pretext of national security, it is referred to as a geo-restriction.

Geo-restrictions are a significant driver behind the increasing use of VPNs. By bypassing these restrictions, VPNs allow users to access content that would otherwise be unavailable, enabling greater freedom of information and connectivity across borders.

Content licensing and copyrights

Many users turn to VPNs to watch movies and TV shows unavailable in their region. For instance, Oppenheimer was released on Netflix Australia in September 2023 but remains absent from the American Netflix library due to copyright and content distribution laws.

With a VPN, however, you can easily change your IP address to an Australian one and stream the movie seamlessly.

Torrenting

Torreniting and P2P file sharing is one of the oldest and most popular way of sharing files on the internet. However due to its illegal nature it has been banned in many countries.

You can receive heavy fines or see jail time if caught torrenting in the United States, the UK, etc. This is why people use a VPN to hide their IP address while torrenting.

Online Privacy

A VPN hides your IP address and encrypts your data so that no one will know your actual location. Your ISP will know that you are using a VPN but not what you are doing online.
